The History of Alpha Phi
In September of 1872 our ten founders gathered one afternoon to discuss the challenges that faced the first college women entering Syracuse University. Pioneering the coeducational system new to the university, they felt unwelcomed in academics and the classroom. Having witnessed the solidarity of the fraternities, our founders' decided they should have one of their own to support women.
Our founders' sought support from one another and established a social center of friends who could sympathize with one another in their perplexities. In 1872 Alpha Phi was founded at Syracuse University. Alpha Phi is now one of the oldest and largest women's fraternities in North America.
